Philippine History as I’ve known are the ones written in the traditional history books and being taught to history classes in grade schools and high schools. A chronological events on how Filipinos came to be, written by western historians. This is the Philippine History that I know. The Philippine history that I’ve known is based on the author’s perspective when they came to the Philippines. As I was introduced to Pantayong Pananaw (perspective) in studying Philippine History I came to realized how Philippine history should be written. How it was supposed to be taught in our schools. I realized why we should use Filipino perspective in writing our History. At the start to be honest I had the hard time to understand why we should use different approach in looking and studying our history. Until the time that I compared the writings of the Philippine history authors, I came to realized that there’s something wrong and that their approach is different from each other. It is evidently shown that the foreign authors wrote Philippine history not for the Filipino people; instead they wrote it as their own history which gave emphasis to their works and Filipino are just part of it without value. We can see how they twist the Philippine History, what was supposed to be written, who’s the heroes and the center of story. I realized we must stand and support pantayong pananaw group in pursuing to impart the value of knowing our history in our own perspective. I personally want to support them in their advocacy to open Filipino awareness on our own Philippine history. I salute Filipino authors who keeps on bugging and letting us realized how important for us to be indoctrinated with the wrong perceptions about our history.
I am glad and greatful I am part of this history class which imparted me great lesson and help me came up into realization of what is the true Philippine History is. I’m proud to be a Filipino. I am a Filipino.
can you give me an example of a reading or source where our history has been twisted according to the western perspective? thanks
